The Francqui Foundation invites Belgian or foreign teachers to occupy a Chair and to teach at the highest level, in its speciality, while promoting international university exchanges.

As part of the Francqui Chair 2019 - ULiège, the Faculty of Architecture is fortunate to invite Anna Heringer, an Austrian architect known for her research in the field of sustainable architecture and her achievements in developing countries.
Ms Heringer will give an inaugural lecture and lead an intensive 3-days workshop in the Faculty of Architecture between February 11 and 13, 2019.  

About the lecturer

Anna Heringer lectures worldwide and has been a visiting professor at various European Universities in Italy, Austria and Germany, she is also invited in Harvard. She has received numerous honors, including the renowned Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007 or the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2011. Her work was exhibited at MoMA in New York City, at the “Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine” in Paris, at MAM in São Paulo, at the Aedes Gallery in Berlin and at the at the Venice Biennale  in 2010.

About the inaugural lecture

For Anna Heringer, architecture is a tool to improve lives. Architecture supplies roofs on the heads of the peoples, but it can also contribute to more dignity, a benevolent society and more cultural diversity.

Choices of materials and techniques of construction have a major role in the distribution of resources, the participation and the equality. Anna Heringer emphasizes that " … we cannot build homes for seven billion people in steel and concrete only ".

By her professional practice and her teaching methods, Anna Heringer seek to question fundamentally the way of conceiving, designing and practicing architecture. She considers architecture as a tool allowing to improve daily lives. Specifically, her reflections are directed towards the use of natural building materials, in particular the method she developed with Martin Rauch: “Clay storming”.

Access to the inaugural lecture is free but registration is required by February 5th, 2019.

The conference will be conducted in English and will be followed by a drink..

About the Workshop

While in Liege, Ms Heringer will lead a 3-day workshop in the building of the Faculty of architecture in “Outremeuse” from February 11 to 13, 2019. 12 selected students will have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of architectural design anchored in a social and environmental approach. The workshop is oriented towards the manipulation of natural material. This worshop approach using clay was developed by Dr. Heringer in collaboration with Martin Rauch and she is already teaching it at various universities around the world, including Harvard.
