Biography
Dana Louagie is a postdoctoral researcher in the collaborative project "Grammar from Space: How spatial elements become applicatives", funded by the Liège Research Council, and works as a substitute lecturer in English language and linguistics at the University of Namur. Her research focuses on the syntax and typology of nominal expressions and other topics in the nominal domain, and she has worked on Australian Aboriginal languages, English, Kwakum (Bantu), and from a broader typological perspective.
Dana studied English and Latin Language and Literature and general linguistics at KU Leuven. She also obtained a teacher's degree in languages. Her MA thesis was a phonological study of Mbarrumbathama, an indigenous Australian language, based on archival materials. In her PhD project at KU Leuven, supervised by Jean-Christophe Verstraete, she investigated the structure of noun phrases in Australian languages (defended in 2017); the results of this study were published in a book by Mouton de Gruyter (2020). During her post-doctoral fellowships at the Universities of Leuven and Liège (funded by the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) and the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) respectively), her projects focused on the diversity found in the nominal domain within and across languages, and comprised both cross-linguistic work and language-specific studies. Dana conducted research stays at the University of Melbourne (Australia) and the University of Manchester (U.K.).
Over the past years, Dana has taught linguistic typology, general and English linguistics, and English proficiency, at different levels (BA-MA-Advanced Ma-PhD). In between research jobs, she worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Ghent (Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication) and as an English teacher in secondary school. In addition, Dana is highly interested in science communication and has participated in projects such as scholar@school, the Children's University and Science Figured Out.
