Biography

Pieter Thyssen is Assistant Professor of Theory of Knowledge and Philosophy of Science at the University of Liège since February 2025. A theoretical chemist turned philosopher of science, with doctorates in both fields, he specialises in the philosophy of chemistry, philosophy of physics and metaphysics of science. His research focuses on metaphysical problems at the heart of chemistry, such as the nature of chemical kinds, chemical causation and chemical laws. He also works on topics in the philosophy of time, such as the philosophical implications of Einstein's theory of special relativity for the nature of time, determinism and human freedom.

Pieter Thyssen is editor of the Cambridge Elements in the Philosophy of Chemistry, co-editor with Klaus Ruthenberg of a volume on anti-atomism in 19th century chemistry, titled Chemistry without Atoms (Königshausen & Neumann, 2025), and co-editor with Vanessa Seifert of a forthcoming volume on the metaphysics of chemistry. He is executive committee member of the International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry (ISPC), and deputy editor for the Springer journal Foundations of Chemistry.

He has worked as Chargé de Recherches F.R.S.-FNRS at the Centre de Philosophie des Sciences et Sociétés (CEFISES) at UCLouvain and as FWO postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) at KU Leuven. He has held visiting scholarships at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, the Department for the Philosophy of Physics at Oxford University, and the Philosophy of the Sciences Group at the Universidad de Buenos Aires.

While his left brain is trained as a scientist and philosopher, his right brain prefers the piano. He enjoys exploring the world on foot, and applies a chemist's precision to the art of brewing (Ethiopian) coffee.
