Biography

PhD in Agricultural Sciences and Biological Engineering since 1990, Patrick du Jardin is a professor of Plant Biology at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège, where he served as dean from 2007 to 2009.

Three main areas of activity can be distinguished:

  • Plant Biology and Biotechnologies: a researcher in plant physiology and biotechnologies, Patrick du Jardin is recognized as an international reference on the concept of biostimulants in agriculture, a new category of fertilizing products for which he laid the foundation of the recent European regulatory definition. He has dedicated himself to the scientific editing of several books on innovation in this sector and has (co-)chaired the scientific committees of major international conferences on the subject since 2017.
  • Ethics in Life Sciences and Technologies: Patrick du Jardin is the current president of the French committee ¿Éthique en Commun¿ INRAE-Cirad-Ifremer-IRD. This committee examines the ethical issues that research in the fields of food, agriculture, the sea, environment, and sustainable development may raise, particularly those that concern the relationship between science and society. His activity in the field of ethics is extended by his teachings at the University of Liège, where he co-coordinates courses, and by a personal research on the ethics of bioengineering.
  • Biosafety of Plant Biotechnologies: Patrick du Jardin has been working for over 10 years with EFSA (European Food Safety Authority, Parma, Italy) and served as vice-chair of its expert panel on agricultural GMOs from 2012 to 2015, responsible for risk analysis associated with their deliberate release into the environment. He has also worked for many years for the Belgian Competent authorities.

Patrick du Jardin is above all a teacher who is passionately dedicated to the pedagogy of biology, biosafety, and bioethics for his bachelor's and master's students in Bioengineering. With a didactic aim, he designed and now directs the Botanical Garden on the campus of Gembloux. Patrick du Jardin is also a lecturer and columnist, aiming to contribute to the popularization of his areas of expertise.
