Biography

After being awarded a degree in biology from the University of Liege in 1999, Charlotte Cornil then began a PhD thesis in the Behavioral Neuroendocrinology Laboratory headed by Jacques Balthazart in the CNCM (Center for cellular and Molecular Neurobiology), now called GIGA Neurosciences. There she studied the rapid effects of oestrogens on male sexual behavior and their interactions with dopamine. Having defended her thesis in 2004, Charlotte Cornil joined the laboratory of Gregory Ball at Johns Hopkins University Baltimore (Maryland, USA) for a post-doctoral internship in the US supported by grants from the BAEF (Belgian American Educational Foundation), the NIH (National Institute of Health) and the FNRS. Back at the University of Liege in 2007, the young researcher devoted her research to the study of the rapid effects of oestrogens and the control of aromatase. In 2009, she was appointed as a Research Associate at the F.R.S.-FNRS and becomes Senior Research Associate in 2017. In 2014, she becomes  head  of the laboratory of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology. Her work aims to identify the neuroendocrine and neurochemical underpinnings of sexual differentiation and activation of reproductive behaviors in vertebrates, with a particular interest in birds. Major topics studied in the laboratory include the neurosteroidogenesis, interactions between steroids and neurotransmitters, neuroanatomical or neurochemical sex differences and the role of sex steroidsin the plasticity of the developing or adult nervous system.
