Biography

Pieter Van Cleynenbreugel joined the Faculty of Law, Political Science and Criminology of the University of Liège as a full-time professor of law in January 2016. He teaches courses in European Union law, both at Bachelor's and Master's level. He has been a visiting professor at Paris-Dauphine university, where he taught a course on EU competition law. Since 1 January 2019, he is also directeur of the Liège Competition and Innovation Institute/EU law @Liège research group, a center within the Cité Research Unit.

Pieter obtained an LL.B (2007, summa cum laude, ranked first of his class) and LL.M (2009, summa cum laude, ranked first) at KU Leuven. In 2010, he obtained an additional LL.M from Harvard Law School, as a Belgian American Educiational Foundation and Fulbright grantee. Between 2010 and 2013, he was a PhD fellow (Aspirant) of the Research Foundation Flanders, affiliated with the Law Faculty of KU Leuven. In that capacity, he prepared a doctoral thesis on the organisation of EU supervisory authorities in the fields of competition law and (financial) market regulation. This thesis was supervised by professors Wouter Devroe and Koen Geens. After publicly defending his thesis on 3 September 2013, Pieter spent two years as a full-time 'universitair docent' at Leiden Law School, the Netherlands.

His research and publications focus on EU internal market law, EU competition law, regulation of the platform economy and of artificial intelligence, as well as on EU (administrative) law enforcement. He has published in those different fields, both in national and international journals. In 2020, he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant, allowing to complete a project on the administrative autonomy of Member States in relation to European Union law (EUDAIMONIA, 2021-2026).
