Biography

I am a post-doctoral researcher at the Physiology of Cognition Lab at the GIGA Institute - University of Liège. My interests focus on understanding the role of brain and bodily physiology in the cognitive functions of sleep (emotion, memory, attention, consciousness).

I studied during my doctorate at ENS (Paris, France) the capacity of the brain to stay connected to its external environment during sleep. We have shown that the sleeping brain remains able to carefully follow certain speech flows, as well as learn an entirely novel foreign language. Nonetheless, these abilities crucially depend on the stages of sleep and their accompanying brain rhythms, highlighting the flexibility and diversity of cognitive functions across sleep stages and its physiological correlates.

During my post-doctorate, I study how the body is involved in memory consolidation, emotional regulation and variations in consciousness during sleep. To do this, I will focus on the modulation of cardiac activity and its interactions with brain activity to study the role of autonomic activity in the realization of sleep cognitive functions. By this way, we hope to gain a better understanding on the embodied nature of cognitive functions across conscious states during sleep.

Finally, I am a coordinator of the ALIUS Research group, an international and interdisciplinary research group dedicated to the study of the diversity of consciousness. In this context, I participate in the editorial committee of the ALIUS Bulletin, an annual journal compiling interviews with prominent researchers on states of consciousness. I also take part to the organization of conferences gathering the scientific community and a large public interested in these themes, with the aim of fostering discussion and advancement of scientific understanding of consciousness across its various manifestations.
