Biography
When beginning studies in pharmacy in Paris, the city where she was born and grew up, Brigitte Malgrange had absolutely no intention of aiming at a career in research. She instead saw herself working in a pharmacy. To that extent, it could be said that her plans failed: the ex-Parisian is today constructing an excellent career as a researcher at Liège!
After having become a Doctor in Pharmacy in 1989, Brigitte Malgrange the following year succeeded in taking a European DEA in Basic and Applied Toxicology. At the same time as working at Rhône Poulenc Rorer, in France, she began her research at the ULg, in Professor Moonen¿s department, and started the task of obtaining a doctorate in experimental biomedical sciences, which she gained in 1994 on the subject: `The use of in vitro culture for the study of neurones and ototoxicity and the development of neuro and otoprotective therapeutic strategies.¿ She has not left the Liège university since then.
FNRS Research Director since 2009, she is also a key figure at GIGA. After serving as Vice-Director of GIGA from 2016 to 2023, she became its General Director in January 2024. Alongside these management duties and the supervision of master's theses and doctoral dissertations, she directs her Developmental Neurobiology laboratory. Her core research areas remain neurosciences, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), cell biology, regeneration, and the study of stroke.
Brigitte Malgrange has won several prizes, including the Gallen Prize in 1996, as well as the Prix Alverenga de Piauhy (in 2004) and the Prix Comte de Launoit, awarded by the Amis de l¿Université de Liège (in 2005) for the dissertation entitled `The differentiation, protection and regeneration of acoustic hair cells and auditory neurons in mammals.¿
