Biography

I studied Physics Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (CH), graduating in the class of 2000 . I theeCn undertook a PhD at the Catholic University of Louvain la Neuve, under the supervision of Xavier Gonze and Jean-Christophe Charlier. I continued as a Marie Curie IEF with Rex Godby at the University of York (UK), and a post-doc fellow and FNRS Chargé de Recherches with Angel Rubio at the University of the Basque Country (ES). In 2009 I was appointed Chargé de Cours at ttahe University of Liege, then Professor in 2017. In 2011 I spent 3 months as a Visiting Professor at the University of Cagliari in Italy, in 2016 was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, and in 2017 Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe. I have been a Research Team Leader of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility since $2009,$ and Chairman of its Scientific Steering Committee since 2012 .

My research revolves around the coupling of electrons and vibrations (phonons) in matter, and its consequences for transport, spectroscopy, or phase transitions. A major application is the development of materials for Thermoelectricity, converting heat into electrical current through the Seebeck effect. More generally I explore all forms of heat, charge, and spin transport in condensed matter systems, both bulk 30 (PbTe, SnSe, oxides, III-V and II-VI semiconductors, as well as metals) and nanostructured 1 D (nanowires and nanotubes) and $2 D$ materials (graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides...). I also have an interest in real time electron and ion dynamics, e.g. for molecules in very fast laser pulses. My aim is two-fold: to attain a quantitative description of materials properties, including defects, finite temperature, and a realistic environment; and to expand our understanding of complex and counterintuitive physical phenomena in condensed matter, discovering new interactions and explaining their microscopic mechanisms.
