Biography
Alix Ernoux is a doctoral researcher in law and has been a F.R.S.-FNRS research fellow since January 2026 (FRESH funding) for her thesis project titled « Civil status across borders - Which legal framework to deal with foreign civil status documents? ». Conducted within the Cité Research Unit (International Law at ULiège) at the University of Liège, her research examines the legal framework governing the documentary phase preceding the recognition of foreign civil status in Belgium. Through an analysis of Belgian and European norms, as well as their practical application, she focuses on the obstacles faced by individuals (Belgian, European, or third-country nationals) and administrations dealing with foreign civil status documents, and the consequences of these obstacles for access to fundamental rights. Her work lies at the intersection of private international law, family law, and fundamental rights.
She is a member of

- and the Belgian Network of Junior Researchers in International Law (SBDI).
Holding a master's degree in public law (ULiège) and a specialized master's degree in human rights (UCL/UNamur/Saint-Louis), she worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Public, Constitutional, and Human Rights Law Department (Ch. Behrendt and F. Bouhon) and later in the Private International Law Department (P. Wautelet) at the University of Liège. She also practiced as a trainee lawyer at the Liège Bar (Cabinet Andrien), specializing in immigration law, nationality law, and private international law, before joining the Association pour le Droit des Étrangers (ADDE) as a legal expert in private international law and nationality law.
Her research focuses on various aspects of the lives of foreign individuals and their families: residence rights, nationality law, private international law, and fundamental rights.
