Biographie

E. Bousquet did his undergraduate studies in France and moved to do his PhD thesis at the University of Liège in Belgium in 2003 under the supervision of Philippe Ghosez. He worked on first-principles studies of ferroelectric heterostructures (nanowires, thin films and superlattices). From 2009 to 2010 he moved to do his postdoc with Nicola Spaldin at the University of California Santa Barbara (USA) and from 2011 to 2012 at the ETH Zurich (Switzerland) to work on multiferroic and magnetoelectric crystals. Since 2013 he pursues his works as a permanent FNRS researcher at the University of Liège.

His main research objectives are to understand and design new multifunctional materials using first- and second-principles methods. He uses the combination of the development of new theoretical methods for magnetism within the density functional theory (DFT) and their use for the modeling of technologically appealing exotic material properties. He is developing new capabilities in the ABINIT code such as finite magnetic field or density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) in order to handle magnetic and magnetoelectric responses of crystals that goes from fundamental researches (ferrotoroidal order, magnetoelectric monopoles, etc) to optimal functional materials for technological applications (sensors, spintronic, computer memories, etc). The main crystal systems he is looking at are:

  • Ferroelectric and multiferroic materials
  • Magnetoelectric materials
  • Non-collinear magnets
  • Chiral materials
  • New phenomena at the interface between the aforementioned systems.
