Data Science: A New Course Entirely in English

The Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of Liège is launching a new programme to train specialists in the field of data sciences with an emphasis on the management of large volumes of data and the techniques to analyse and utilise them. Depending on the student's profile, he/she will be able to opt for a Master's in Civil Engineering in Data Science or a Master's in Data Science.

Training professionals to meet the challenges of "Big Data."

Human activity has produced ever increasing data. This multifaceted flood of information is tied to the digitalization of society (social networks, tablets, laptops, connected objects...) and constitutes a massive amount of wealth. This computer data is significantly of considerable importance in the evolution of all areas of society. Commercial developments, scientific research, healthcare and the prediction of environmental phenomena are just a few illustrations. Modeling behaviour makes it possible to better meet the expectations of consumers, anticipate health crises and optimise energy management.

Storing, analysing, and utilising this data in order to extract value from it are all part of the skills of the "data scientist," a specialist in the management of "big data." With this new programme, the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of Liège, which has solid expertise in the domain, will initiate this new program to train students to meet the multiple challenges of this constantly expanding field.

These advanced skills and specific credentials of the data scientists are much sought after by many companies and laboratories.

The revolution of "big data" is often essential for the development, or even the survival of companies in an increasingly competitive world.

With businesses' interests in "big data," new scientific and technical questions are being asked. How can we extract more relevant information from existing data? How can we enrich existing data in a context where obtaining new data can be a significant cost? How do we incorporate more unstructured data, such as videos, text and traces of human-machine interactions, in "big data" learning chains?

These issues are often complex. To develop adapted products/solutions, it is essential for companies to be able to employ experts specially trained in the field of data science. Likewise, many research laboratories will need this expertise to fully utilise experimental data.

A few years ago an engineer, a computer scientist, or a mathematician with general training would have been able to meet these requirements. This is no longer the case today, given the complexity of the problems and the rapid progress on the technological and scientific fronts.

"Data scientists" from the University of Liège will be thoroughly trained, and will have many professional opportunities. They will acquire all the skills necessary to grow their expertise in artificial intelligence and follow the rapid evolution of the sector throughout their careers:

  • Mastery of scientific foundations (in applied mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence...);
  • Implementation of software tools;
  • Development of solutions in a real environment;
  • Cost-benefit analysis;
  • Understanding of the legal and societal implications.


This course is organised around:

A common core :

  • in computer science, applied mathematics, and foundations of data science (computational theory, numerical optimization, artificial intelligence, automatic learning);
  • in management
  • in law (centered on artificial intelligence, data, and robotics).

A choice of electives :

  • in computer science ;
  • in applied mathematics ;
  • in bioinformatics ;
  • in management.

A specialisation and a Master's thesis.

Target Audiance

The training course is geared toward several categories of students: Bachelor or Master's in Civil Engineering, bioengineers, management engineers, graduates of "Hautes Ecoles" (Colleges) in Industrial Engineering or in Computer Science, foreign students, professionals, etc...

The admittance to the Master's programme will differ depending on the degrees obtained and/or professional experience.
