The University community and Amnesty International rallied together on 2 April 2015 in order to support Hamid Babaei, an Iranian PhD student at HEC-ULiège, sentenced in December 2013 to 6 years imprisonment by an Iranian court for "threat to national security" and accused of having refused to spy on other Iranian students in Belgium.

Hamid Babaie is currently still in an Iranian prison, in extremely harsh conditions (lack of medical attention despite his health issues, confiscation of his thesis work material, etc.). The University of Liège is mobilising to demand the release of its student
