Article 30.6 of the Royal Decree of 20 July 2001 requires the operator to ensure that the dosimetry of its staff exposed to ionising radiation is guaranteed. Any individual professionally exposed must therefore wear, except under certain special cases, a dosimeter at chest height.

The SUCPR ensures the dosimetry of the staff of the University of Liège since the creation of the service, and this measurement is also made for the CHU of Liège as well as for different external partners (companies, laboratories, schools,...).

Since 1 September 2009, seeking to be more innovative and efficient, the SUCPR acquired a new technology and was the first dosimetry service in Belgium to use dosimetry through OSL. This technique, based on aluminium oxide, is used in more than 23 countries around the world and by approximately 2,000,000 users.

The dosimeter is certified by the competent authorities in each of these 23 countries. In Belgium, the "Agence Fédérale de Contrôle Nucléaire" certified the dosimeter in October 2009. (Accreditation n° AFCN/737/DOS/F/1)

Since the month of July 2010, the dosimetry service of the University of Liège is approved for execution of external dosimetry by the Federal Agency of Nuclear Control (Accreditation No.): AFCN/36777/SD/E/F).

The dosimetry service is accredited in accordance with the ISO17025 norm

The certification was confirmed during the first trimester of 2016.

If necessary, we can also offer you:

• dosimeters in the form of LiF rings used to measure "extremity" doses:
• electronic dosimeter, direct reading allowing one to know at any moment the dose of radiation X or γ absorbed and the dose rate to which the employee is subject.

Radioactive waste

The SUCPR has for mission the management of our institution's radioactive waste Since 1996, the physical control of radiation has a management and decay hall for low-level, short half-life radioactive waste, with an area of 800 m².

We provide a full service of radioactive waste management: provision of equipment for the packaging of waste, ADR class 7 transport from the producer to the hall, metrology, storage and evacuation after decay. These services are also provided by external partners (private companies, laboratories, care centres, etc.)

The management and decay hall of the radioactive waste meets the standards in force regarding security and radiation protection. It is certified by the ONDRAF (National Body of Radioactive Waste and Fissile Materials) and is subject to frequent audits and controls.

Our mode of management, particularly adapted to the waste from research and health care, gives us the opportunity to be involved in projects financed by the European Commission and earns us regular visits from  international scientific partners.

Training programme - Information

Article 25 of the Royal Decree of 20 July 2001 requires the employer to organise not only the training of the staff, but also - each year - the information of workers who risk being exposed to ionising radiation. The Service of Physical Control organises these training and information sessions at the University of Liège and its CHU.

We also carry out the training and information session for external workers. Among other things, we are working with the Fire Department of Liège (IILE) for the training of firefighters during radiological interventions, the SMUR, Province of Liège, Arcelor Mittal, the AIEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency), corporations learned from dental or veterinary medicine, etc.

Adequate, custom and efficient training is the solid foundation of a complete programme in radiation protection.

Shielding calculations

We perform shielding calculations for various facilities:

• Radiology rooms (human, veterinary and dental medical imaging);
• Nuclear medicine facilities;
• Radiotherapy bunker;
• Laboratories and premises where radioactive isotopes are held.

Transport - shipping - reception of radioactive material

The Royal The Royal Decree of 5 July 2006 concerning the designation as well as the professional qualification of ADR class 7 safety advisers requires the employer to have an ADR class 7 security adviser responsible for the following missions:

• Monitoring compliance with the rules governing the transportation of radioactive goods;
• Advising the company in the operations concerning the transportation of radioactive products;
• Identifying the radioactive goods transported;
• Verifying the purchase of means of transport and any other special requirement relating to radioactive goods;
• Verifying the material used for the transport of radioactive products or for the loading or unloading of said goods;
• Providing appropriate staff training: drivers, shippers and transport agents;
• Implementing appropriate emergency procedures for accidents or incidents;
• Verifying that the personnel assigned to the transport of radioactive goods, or to the loading or unloading of these goods , has enforcement procedures and detailed instructions;
• Verifying the presence on board, the means of transport, documents and security equipment required to accompany the transports and the conformity of these documents and equipment with regard to legislation;
• Implementing verification procedures in order to ensure compliance with regulations regarding loading and unloading operations;
• Managing the administrative aspect of the above mentioned tasks.

Prior approval from the ADR class 7 Security Advisor is essential for any transport of radioactive material between the different buildings, as well as the first shipments to third parties.
