The University of Liège, its students, its academic bodies, its professional core and its supervisory staff are committed to playing a key role in the protection of the environment and in using teaching and research activities as levers to promote better awareness, a global vision and local actions regarding the environment and sustainability.

This commitment includes:

  • the protection and continual improvement of the sites' environment, the prevention of pollution and the reduction of environmental impacts such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, transportation, and the setting of priorities for actions to be taken on this matter;
  • the protection of biodiversity and the economy of natural resources in infrastructures and activities;
  • the respect of environmental regulations and other requirements applicable to the University and its activities;
  • the purchase of products having less impact on the environment; the minimisation of using toxic substances as well as the prevention and management of waste;
  • the development of innovative research regarding sustainable technologies and management methods;
  • the reinforcement of awareness-building through teaching and being an example;
  • the implementation of an appropriate management system, the sufficient training of members of the university community, as well as their training in actions implemented and the results obtained regarding the environment;
  • the collaboration between all components of the university community and with the partners of the University for environmental and sustainability issues.

The University is indeed aware that:

  • the protection of the environment and natural resources is a responsibility of the University and of all its members regarding future generations;
  • by adopting these values and by integrating them into its activities and its organisation, the University will be better able to complete its missions in teaching, research and public service; it will thus be able to reinforce its role as a leader in these fields;
  • the promotion of these values will create a better teaching and working environment;
  • the implementation of consumption and impact reduction programmes can also generate certain operational costs.

I am committed, with the support and active participation of all members of the university community, to helping realise the activities of the University in accordance with this policy. The hierarchical responsibilities within the Faculties and structural research entities are responsible for monitoring the efficient implementation of this approach.
