raduated from the University of Liège in 1991, Olivier Detry embarked upon university hospital practice from the beginning of his surgical training, investing himself particularly in clinical research, in the patient's bed, and in preclinical research within the research laboratory of the Department of Surgery (CREDEC), allowing him to defend a doctoral thesis on lung transplantation in 1997. A one-year stay at UCLA's "Liver support research laboratory" in the USA (1996-1997) then focused on liver diseases and their management through surgery and liver transplantation, which were summarized in an aggregation thesis in 2007. "This preclinical and clinical research activity has enabled me to collaborate successfully with other departments of our university and other Belgian and international institutions, as well as to participate in more than 200 national and international publications." Olivier Detry is currently coordinating a national prospective study on liver cancer, funded by the Cancer Fund.

A surgeon appointed to the University Department of Abdominal Surgery and Transplantation at the University Hospital of Liège since 1997, Olivier Detry has been involved in the various activities of this department, both in the daily care of patients, particularly transplant patients, and in the theoretical and clinical training of future doctors and abdominal surgeons. He is a member of various sections of the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery and the Belgian Society of Transplantation, of which he was President (2016-2018).

For the past 10 years, Olivier Detry has been working on collaborative projects with the sister departments of the universities of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi (DRCongo), through regional and federal cooperation funding, including a PIC project.

University hospital excellence for the benefit of patients and students

"A university teacher must be an expert in his or her field, a good pedagogue, and an inspiring example to his or her students. I intend to use my clinical and academic experience to build on it and create an interest in preclinical and clinical research among our young doctors in surgical training. This research must be carried out in collaboration with other departments of our Faculty and University, but also with other Belgian and international institutions. In 2020, high-level pre-clinical and clinical medical research will necessarily require these national and international collaborations, enabling the hospital-university excellence to which our patients, students and university are entitled. "

Master of Specialization in Surgery

"Among my teaching assignments, the Faculty has asked me to formalize the Master of Specialization in Surgery. This teaching is complex because it must combine theory and practice. In 2020, the teaching of surgical practice must involve the use of modern and innovative technologies, including simulation, and practice in the anatomy laboratory. The laboratory of the Department of Surgery (CREDEC) is important for this research and teaching. Finally, I intend to continue to collaborate on cooperation and development projects with universities in the DRC; these cooperations are the quintessence of our university mission. "
