The One Health initiative at the University of Liège

As part of its approach to social and environmental transition, the University of Liège wishes to structure and strengthen its contribution to international efforts to prevent and prepare for health and environmental challenges, in line with the One Health concept.

As highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the current context is marked by increased exposure and vulnerability to health risks as a result of climate change, demographic growth, the ageing of the population in industrialised countries, urbanisation, the globalisation of trade, migration, rising inequalities, the degradation of ecosystems and the collapse of biodiversity. This situation dramatically demonstrates the need to understand and take account of the interdependencies between the Health of humans, animals, plants and, more broadly, ecosystems to prevent health crises better and respond to their occurrence. Addressing human, animal, plant and ecosystem health issues jointly, the One Health* concept invites all scientific disciplines to collaborate with each other and with other players in society.

The University of Liège wants to capitalise on its strengths and its many collaborations with internal, local, national and international partners in its research, teaching and community service activities to make the most of its expertise and contribute to sustainable well-being. To achieve this, our university intends to offer an institutional framework that stimulates collaboration between scientific disciplines and other societal players.
