Tool to raise awareness of sexist and gender-based violence and harassment
The Conseil Genre et Égalité de l'Université de Liège has developed a violentometer: a simple and effective tool to raise awareness of sexist and gender-based violence and harassment within our institution.
Because it's not always easy to identify an unhealthy situation, the Violentometer can be used to "measure" whether a personal, professional or educational relationship is inadequate or even unacceptable. Its aim is to raise awareness of one's working environment and help transform it.
The violentometer is a prevention tool developed in feminist, public social action and association circles. Created in Latin America to denounce violence against women, it has been used on many occasions: by the Marie de Paris, the Observatoires des violences faites aux femmes de Paris et Saine-Saint-Denis and by the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur in France. In Belgium, it has been taken up by the FGTB.
The violentometer proposed by ULiège is a version created specifically by the Gender and Equality Council to combat harassment and sexist and sexual violence in a pedagogical, academic and professional context.
The violentometer can be downloaded here. It is being distributed this Tuesday, May 7 in the University's libraries and cafeterias. It is also available from the Fédé. If you would like to order violentometers for your department or team, please contact genre-egalite@uliege.be.
