Biography
Doctor in Agricultural Sciences and Biological Engineering since 1990, Patrick du Jardin is Professor of Plant Biology at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège, where he was Dean from 2007 to 2009. Active researcher in plant physiology and biotechnology, he is also a scientist engaged in the expertise of biotechnological risks in agriculture. In particular, he worked for more than 10 years with the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority, Parma, Italy) and served as vice-president of its experts panel on agricultural GMOs from 2012 to 2015. Cultivating transdisciplinarity, he has been a member of several ethics committees in France, in particular for the National Institute of Agronomic Research, and was rapporteur of opinion papers on GMOs, Nanotechnologies and Synthetic Biology. Currently, he is involved as an expert in the implementation of a new European regulation on fertilizing products and has (co-)edited several books and monographs on innovation in this sector. He is recognized as an international reference on the concept of biostimulants in agriculture, a new category of fertilizing products for which he laid the foundations for the recent European regulatory definition. He has (co-) chaired the scientific committees of the main world congresses on the subject since 2017.
Patrick du Jardin is above all a teacher who devotes himself with passion to the pedagogy of plant and general biology for his bachelor's and master's students in Bioengineering. He also develops courses on bioethics and ethics applied to bioengineering. With educational concerns in mind, he designed and now directs the Botanical Garden on the Gembloux campus.
Patrick du Jardin is also a speaker and columnist, wanting to contribute to the popularization of his areas of expertise.
