Biography

Philippe Mairiaux is an occupational physician and an ergonomist by training. After getting his PhD at the University of Louvain in Belgium, he moved to the University of Liège where he has been for 20 years full-time professor at the School of Public Health. He just retired from his teaching duties on October 1, 2016.

His main research interests are prevention of work related musculoskeletal disorders and return to work strategies for injured or sick-listed workers. During 10 years from 1990 onwards, he has been consultant in disability prevention for a large steel company. He has coordinated in 2011, on behalf of the Belgian Ministry of Work and Employment, an extensive report on Return to work after a long duration sick leave. More recently, he completed a study commissioned by the King Baudouin Foundation on Breast cancer and work.

Past-president of the Belgian Agency for Occupational Risks (FEDRIS) scientific Council, he remains a scientific advisor of its Task force coordinating the Belgian project for secondary prevention of low back pain, which is a return to work program implemented at the country level.

He has been asked by the Minister in charge of Social Affairs to chair a national body called National College for Social Insurance Medicine whose missions and tasks will be to propose standardised methods for the assessment of work incapacity, to elaborate good practices guidelines for social insurance medicine, and to issue recommendations for common processes or pathways when considering professional reintegration within the various sectors of the social security system. The present minister of Health has decided to extend the activities of this body until December 2023.
