Biography
Neurologist, Research Director at the FNRS and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Liège, Steven Laureys is currently Chairholder of the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neuroplasticity at the CERVO Brain Research Centre of Université Laval (Québec, Canada) and Director of the Joint International Research Unit on Neuroplasticity between U Laval and U Liège. He founded the Coma Science Group at the CHU of Liège (which he directed until 2020) and the GIGA Consciousness research unit of the University of Liège (which he directed until 2023). He is also Head Neurologist of the TRAINM NeuroRehab Clinics (Antwerp & Amsterdam), CMO of BRAINM Neuro Modulation Clinics, Founding Co-Director of the Zhejiang¿Belgium Joint Laboratory on Disorders of Consciousness (Hangzhou Normal University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Brain Connectivity.
The major part of his research is devoted to the study of neurological recovery and cognition in altered states of consciousness in brain-injured patients (coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, minimally conscious state, locked-in syndrome), as well as during anaesthesia, sleep, meditation and hypnosis. Steven Laureys is the author of more than 600 scientific articles published in journals such as Science, Nature Reviews, The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. He edited "The Neurology of Consciousness" (3rd Ed., 2026) and is an internationally bestselling author and keynote speaker.
Winner of numerous scientific prizes ¿ including the Francqui Prize (2017), the most prestigious Belgian scientific award, the International Prize for Translational Neuroscience of the Max Planck Society (2017, with Giulio Tononi), the Generet Award of the King Baudouin Foundation (2019), the Brown-Séquard Award of the European Academy of Neurology (2020), the European Award in Medicine (2022) and the Changjiang Scholar Chair Professorship of the Chinese Ministry of Education (2026) ¿ he was elected Member of the Academia Europaea in 2024 and is recognised as one of the world's leading specialists in consciousness and cognition.
