Biography
After gaining a degree in Physics (University of Liège, 2002), John MARTIN embarked on a PhD on the physics of cold atoms under the supervision of Professor Thierry Bastin (University of Liège, 2006). His thesis focused on the interaction of ultracold atoms with the quantized electromagnetic field inside a cavity. John MARTIN subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Theoretical Physics Laboratory of the Toulouse Paul Sabatier University. There he took special interest in quantum chaos and quantum entanglement. In 2008 he returned to Liège as a F.R.S-FNRS postdoctoral researcher at the ULg, within the cold atoms physics group, I.P.N.A.S.. In February 2011, he was appointed lecturer at the Faculty of Sciences¿ Department of Physics. Awards: 2006 prize of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, Invited Professor at Université Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France) during 6 months.
The Theoretical Quantum optics group conducts fundamental research related to quantum information theory and the theory of open quantum systems. It is mainly open atomic systems coupled to the electromagnetic field which are studied, with a particular interest in cooperative phenomena (superradiance, subradiance, superdecoherence ...) and the interplay between the internal and external degrees of freedom of atoms. Other research interests include quantum entanglement in multiqubit systems, quantum chaos in simple atomic systems, such as cold atoms or Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, and the multifractal properties of quantum wave functions. The work is theoretical and involves both analytical and numerical computations.
