Fernand Thiry
Fernand Thiry is a specialist in criminal law. At the time of his rectorship (1906 to 1909), the law faculty had over 200 students.
Born in Namur in 1850 and dying in Liège in 1916, Rector Fernand Thiry (1906-1909), a Doctor of Law from the University of Liège (1878), succeeded Guillaume Nypels in 1886 in the chair of criminal law. According to Ernest Mahaim, "for thirty-eight years he taught a doctrine of indulgence and kindness dictated by a generous heart"(Biographie nationale, t. 25, 1930-1932, col. 10).
Founder of the "Patronage des condamnés, détenus et libérés" society (1888), he is also the author of an important Traité de droit criminel published in Liège in 1895. His speeches testify to both his skills as a criminal lawyer and his humanitarian commitment to supporting prisoners - with a view to their social reintegration - and protecting abandoned children.
Il y a deux missions à remplir à l’égard des auteurs d’infractions. La première consiste dans l’exécution de la menace légale […]. La seconde consiste dans l’éducation morale des coupables, dans les conseils qu’on leur donne, dans les encouragements qu’on leur apporte, dans l’assistance qu’on leur prête. Tandis que la première œuvre est basée sur l’intimidation, la seconde est faite tout entière de bienveillance, de bonté, de charité.
